Albertus Koeze & Co. Recalls Milk Chocolate Covered Peanuts Sold in Bulk in Its Michigan Retail Stores Because of Possible Health Risk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Grand Rapids, Michigan -- February 20, 2009 --- Koeze Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan is voluntarily recalling milk chocolate covered peanuts because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
These milk chocolate covered peanuts were sold in bulk from behind the candy counter in the two Albertus Koeze & Company retail stores in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Wyoming, Michigan until February 20, 2009. No retail - packaged goods are covered by this recall.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
Koeze Company learned on February 20, 2009 that milk chocolate covered peanuts purchased for resale in its retail stores had been recalled by the manufacturer, Marich Confectionary of Hollister, CA.
Any customer who purchased these recalled products should immediately discontinue use and return the items or a receipt to an Albertus Koeze & Company store for a refund.
