Seattle Chocolate Company Inc. Announces a Nationwide Voluntary Recall of Choxie Brand - Dark Chocolate Nut Truffle Meltaways Due to Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Seattle Washington – February 18, 2009 (revised: February 27, 2009) – Seattle –based Seattle Chocolate Co. Inc. announced last week on February 19, 2009, a voluntary recall of all lots of Choxie Brand -Dark Chocolate Nut Truffle Meltaways due to peanuts being sourced from PCA Plainview Texas facility, a facility which was deemed unsanitary by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
This voluntary recall is now re-emphasized and underscored by the latest findings from the FDA that the Plainview Texas PCA facility had products which were found to be contaminated with Salmonella. The Choxie Brand -Dark Chocolate Nut Truffle Meltaways were manufactured using peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of America because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled Choxie Brand items contain chocolate assortments which include Peanut Brittle Truffle(s) that contain candied peanuts originally sourced from the Plainview Texas, Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) facility. The products were distributed nationwide by the Target Corporation to all Target and SuperTarget stores and through McLane Distributors to Target and SuperTarget stores.

No other Choxie items are included in the recall. There are no reported illnesses associated with this candy item, which are only sold at Target and SuperTarget stores nationwide.
Consumers are advised to not consume these items and may return these items to Target or SuperTarget Stores for a full refund or they may call Target Guest Relations at: 1-800-316-6151.
