Penzeys Spices Recalls Hungarian Half-Sharp Paprika Because of Possible Health Risk

John P. Tillison

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Brookfield, WI -- May 27, 2004 -- Penzeys Spices of Brookfield, WI, is recalling all sizes of Penzeys Hungarian Half-Sharp Paprika because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled Penzeys Hungarian Half-Sharp Paprika was distributed nationwide through mail orders and in Penzeys Spices stores located in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin. The product comes in the following sizes: 2.5 ounce clear glass jar, 1.3 ounce plastic jar and in 4 ounce, 8 ounce, and 16 ounce bags. The products in question are marked with the codes 47614, 47685, 47643, 47656, and 47630 just below the bar code.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the State of Florida revealed the presence of Salmonella in some 2.5 ounce jars of Hungarian Half-Sharp Paprika.

Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased Penzeys Hungarian Half-Sharp Paprika are urged to return them to the nearest Penzeys Spices store or contact the mail order division for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-741-7787.
