ESG Appendix D: Installing Java Runtime Environment

Uninstall Previous Versions of Java

  1. Delete previous versions of Java from your machine
    1. Go to Start Menu and click on Control Panel
    2. Click on Programs and Features
    3. Click on a previous version of Java and click ‘Uninstall’Screenshot: Click on a previous version of Java and click ‘Uninstall’
    4. Restart your machine
  2. Go to C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\LocalLow\Sun and delete the ‘Java’ folder
  3. Go to C:\Program Files (x86) and delete the ‘Java’ folder
  4. Restart your machine

Install Current Version of Java

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Go to http://java.com/endisclaimer icon
  3. Click the ‘Free Java Download’ button
  4. Click the ‘Agree and Start Free Download’ button
  5. Save file to desktop
  6. Go to your desktop (or the location where you saved the JRE install file from the previous step)
  7. Double click the downloaded JRE install file to begin the installation
  8. You will be prompted with the following question: “Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?” Click the ‘Yes’ button
  9. Click the ‘Install >’ button on the Welcome to Java screen
  10. Click the ‘Next >’ button on the Offers screen (you may opt out of the highlighted checkboxes)Screenshot: Click the ‘Next  >’ button
  11. Once your machine has successfully installed Java, you will see the following screen. Click the ‘Close’ buttonScreenshot: Click the ‘Close’ button

Install Java Cryptography Extension (JCE)

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Go to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomendisclaimer icon
  3. Scroll down to the ‘Additional Resources’ section
  4. Click on the ‘Download’ button to the right of ‘Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files for JDK/JRE 8’:Screenshot: Click on the ‘Download’ button
  5. Click the radio button next to ‘Accept License Agreement’. Then click on ‘jce_policy-8.zip’ to download the JCE files:

  6. Save the zip file to your desktop
  7. Go to your desktop (or where you saved the zip file from the previous step) and open it
  8. Open the folder contained within the zip file
  9. Copy the 3 files:

  10. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_31\lib\security
                  Note: JRE version # may change as new versions are released
  11. Paste the files copied from step 9
  12. Click ‘Copy and Replace’ two times:

Add ESG Sites to Java

  1. Go to Start Menu and click on Control Panel
  2. Click on Java
  3. Go to the Security tab
  4. Click the ‘Edit Site List…’button

  5. Add the following URLs
    1. https://esgtest.fda.gov
    2. https://esg.fda.gov
  6. Click the ‘OK’ button

  7. Click the ‘OK’ button again

Disable Automatic Updates

  1. Go to Start Menu and click on Control Panel
  2. Click on Java

  3. On the Java Control Panel Pop-up click on ‘Update’ tab and then uncheck ‘Check for Updates Automatically’
  4. Click the ‘OK’ button

  5. The following pop-up will be displayed, click ‘Do Not Check’

  6. Click the ‘Ok’ button to close the Java Control Panel
