Did you know there is a system in place that connects regulatory food-testing laboratories so they can detect, identify, respond to, and aid in the recovery from bioterrorism or public health emergencies involving our food supply?

It's called the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN), and it has been vital to the response to major outbreaks of foodborne disease in many products, including spinach, pet food, and peanut butter.

Learn more about this essential public safety component—which involves federal, state, and local laboratories—during an hour-long webinar hosted by Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

An opportunity to ask questions will follow this presentation.

When:  Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at 1 p.m. Eastern Time

Where:  To join the webinar, see the instructions at http://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/Transparency/Basics/ucm230224.htm. Webinar materials will also be available there.

Host:  FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA)

Featured speaker: Carl Sciacchitano, director of ORA's Division of Field Science.

This webinar is part of a series of monthly online sessions hosted by different FDA centers and offices. The series is part of FDA Basics, a Web-based resource aimed at helping the public better understand what the agency does.

This article appears on FDA's Consumer Updates page, which features the latest on all FDA-regulated products.
