Environmental Decision Memo for Food Contact Notification No. 000742

Date:June 26, 2007
From:Supervisor, Environmental Review Team (ERT)
Office of Food Additive Safety (HFS-246)
Subject:FCN No. 742 – Vectra7 copolymers as a basic component used in the production of articles, including bottles, intended to contact food
Notifier:Ticona
86 Morris Avenue
Summit, New Jersey
To:Division of Food Contact Notifications (HFS-275)
Attention: Julie Mayer

Attached is the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for FCN 742. The subject copolymers produced by the polymerization of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid with one or more of the following monomers: 4-hydroxybenzoic acid; 4,4’-bipheonol; N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide; terephthalic acid; resorcinol; and isophthalic acid such that a minimum of 50 percent of the polymer units are derived from 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid alone or in combination with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, not more than 25 percent of the polymer units are derived individually from 4,4’biphenol, N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide and terephthalic acid, and not more than 15 percent of the polymer units are derived individually from resorcinol and isophthalic acid. The copolymers will be used as a basic polymer in the production of articles intended to contact food (excluding PET bottles).

When this notification becomes effective, this FONSI and the notifier's environmental assessment, dated May 30, 2007, may be made available to the public and we will post them on the internet at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~rdb/opa-envt.html.*

Please let me know if there is any change in the identity or use of the food-contact substance.

Finding of No Significant Impact

Finding of No Significant Impact

A food contact notification (FCN No. 742), submitted by Ticona, to provide for the safe use of copolymers produced by the polymerization of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid with one or more of the following monomers: 4-hydroxybenzoic acid; 4,4’-bipheonol; N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide; terephthalic acid; resorcinol; and isophthalic acid such that a minimum of 50 percent of the polymer units are derived from 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid alone or in combination with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, not more than 25 percent of the polymer units are derived individually from 4,4’biphenol, N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide and terephthalic acid, and not more than 15 percent of the polymer units are derived individually from resorcinol and isophthalic acid. The copolymers will be used as a basic polymer in the production of articles intended to contact food (excluding PET bottles).

The Environmental Review Team has determined that allowing this notification to become effective will not significantly affect the quality of the human environment and therefore will not require the preparation of an environmental impact statement. This finding is based on information submitted by the notifier in an environmental assessment dated May 30, 2007.
