The enclosed CVM Update titled INFORMATION FOR DAIRY AND BEEF PRODUCERS - PROTEIN FEED RULES explains rules now in effect to prevent the establishment and spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the United States.

Observations of prohibited animal protein being fed to dairy animals are not a violation of the Grade "A" Pasteurized Milk Ordinance. However, the FDA would appreciate assistance in the dissemination of information about these rules. The FDA requests the state milk regulatory officials to widely distribute this CVM Update. This might include leaving a copy with farm inspection reports, providing copies at meetings of dairy farmers or to local dairy extension agents. Additional copies of the CVM Update are enclosed with this memorandum for distribution.
