Introduction to Morning Session

by Paul Bachman

MR. BACHMAN: Good morning. We would like to begin, so if you could find a place to sit, we will get on with today’s program. Thank you.

My name is Paul Bachman. I am the Team Leader for the Enforcement and Regulatory Policy Team within the Division of Compliance of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance in CVM. I would like to welcome you this morning to the 5th Animal Feed Safety System Public Meeting.

If you look in your packets, you have -- obviously have an agenda for this morning. You also have a sheet that says “From the Podium” in which we have brief bios of the individuals that will be speaking throughout the day, in addition to the Team Member lists of the Animal Feed Safety System Team and hand-outs for the slides that will be used throughout today.

On the right hand side, at least in my folder, are the important links to the various home pages and FDAA, as well as the Animal Feed Safety System Draft Documents. You also have a copy in there of the 3rd Edition of the Draft Framework for the Animal Feed Safety System which Dr. Graber will be presenting this morning, as well as some of the recent CVA -- CVM, I’m sorry -- update information.

If you do not have a copy of the registrants, individuals that have registered for today’s Public Meeting, they were out here in the hall on a table approximately back over to your right as you leave this room.

Before we begin, I would just like to mention that your agenda indicates that we will -- or falsely indicates, anyway, now that we have forgotten that we will be starting at 9:00 a.m. and going to 11:30, at which time we will have a lunch break. There is no indication of a break this morning, but Dr. Graber has indicated to me that at some point in time, he may wind down a little bit and need to take a break, and so we have been -- you know, we have been feeding him coffee and water this morning so hopefully his natural break time will come about the appropriate time for the remainder of the group. And we -- this meeting is being transcribed, I believe -- yes -- and I hope that part did not make it in there. If it did, that is fine.

(Laughter)

You have heard me say worse things than that before, most of you, anyway.

All right, it is my pleasure this morning to introduce Dr. Bernadette Dunham, who is the Center Director for CVM. Bernadette has been with us as the Director since the first part of this year, and prior to that was the Deputy Director.

I am not going to be long in introductions. As I indicated, you can read the brief bios. So with that brief introduction, Dr. Dunham, thank you for being here this morning.
