FDA Animal Feed Safety System 2008 Public Meeting

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is holding a public meeting to cover changes made to the Animal Feed Safety System (AFSS) project since last year’s public meeting, and to present work-in-progress on a method for ranking feed hazards according to the risks they pose to animal and public health and a risk-based method for prioritizing feed establishment inspections.  

This is the 5th in a series of Animal Feed Safety System (AFSS) Public Meetings.   The model being developed for assessing risks from feed hazards  consists of two components: 1) Health Consequence Scoring and 2) Exposure Scoring. At this meeting the Agency will describe how the two components are combined to arrive at a ranking of risks of the more common hazards in swine feed.  FDA is also using risk-based criteria for deciding where best to focus its inspectional resources.  A brief presentation will be made at this meeting showing progress to date as it applies to feed establishment inspections.
