The committee discussed the microbial food safety of an antimicrobial drug application under review for use in food producing animals in accordance with CVM's Guidance for Industry #152. Microbial food safety is that part of the human food safety evaluation that looks at the impact of the use of an antimicrobial drug on the development of resistance among pathogenic, zoonotic bacteria of human health concern (Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, etc.).

The committee heard a preview of a draft risk assessment on animal cloning using somatic cell nuclear transfer. The risk assessment addressed both animal health and consumption of food derived from animal clones and their progeny.

The committee was seeking recommendations on the issues of import tolerances under the provisions of the Animal Drug Availability Act of 1996, and on the antimicrobial drug effects on pathogen load in food-producing animals as pathogen load relates to the pre-approval process of new animal drug applications.
