DIVISION OF FOOD PROCESSING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

1. DIVISION OF FOOD PROCESSING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (DJJHDB).
A. Conducts food safety, nutrition, and defense research in food processing, food packaging, and food technology as it relates to food production and handling principles.
B. Participates, in conjunction with the Office of Food Defense, Communication and Emergency Response (OFDCER) and others, in educational and informational programs on contemporary food safety and security issues.
C. Evaluates and accredits Grade "A" Milk laboratories and certifies state laboratory evaluation officers.
D. Conducts proficiency testing program for milk, shellfish, Food Emergency Response Network/Laboratory Response
E. Provides consultation to FDA and outside organizations on laboratory equipment, apparatus, methods, and facilities problems associated with laboratory examination of foods.
2. PROCESS ENGINEERING BRANCH (DJJHDB1).
A. Investigates the public health risks associated with processing technologies that produce shelf-stable or extended shelf-life foods.
B. Measures the kinetics of microbial destruction/inhibition of food processing systems.
C. Investigates package seal integrity evaluation methods and how defects are formed during processing.
D. Measures migration of food/package constituents including nanoparticles.
3. FOOD TECHNOLOGY BRANCH (DJJHDB2)
A. Investigates, the characteristics and mechanisms of survival of bacterial and viral pathogens in foods and food production environments.
B. Evaluates the effectiveness of preventive controls to limit the risk of transfer and survival of food borne pathogens.
C. Assesses the effects of processing and sanitation procedures on the presence and detection of allergens.
D. Develops and evaluates effective detection methods for foodborne enteric viruses.
4. AUTHORITY AND EFFECTIVE DATE.
The functional statements for this Division were approved by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, effective October 1, 2012.
