The Conclusions

Our conclusions appear in Table 2. They contain our predictions of 13 Technology Areas and 32 Specific Product Groups in which significant innovation is highly likely during the next decade.

The technologies and products in Table 2 were chosen from much larger universes of each. Our expert participants also expressed optimism about other developments. However, they considered the 10-year time horizon for this forecast too short for those other technologies and products to be brought to reality. [See full report.]

For all stakeholders involved in the evaluation, funding, and clinical use of medical devices, it is clear that the landscape of these activities will change. Still, informed preparation for these developments is possible. Such preparation has the potential to achieve significant gains in the contributions made by medical devices to health care. It is our hope that the information in this analysis provides a valuable resource for guiding forward new health care technologies on solid scientific bases.
Finally, we note that, as in our previous 10-year forecast, our conclusions can be no better than the expertise of the individual participants with whom we collaborated. In our view, this group of participants brought an extraordinary blend of knowledge and insight to the forecast process. It is hard to imagine a better group for the task.
