Research Project: Diagnostic Ultrasound

CDRH is responsible for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound devices. This project represents a diversified portfolio of research activities designed to promote development of expertise in a broad range of topics relevant to regulation of current and anticipated ultrasound devices. This project is divided into 4 parts: (1) improvements in hydrophone-based measurements of diagnostic ultrasound transducer output intensity, (2) characterization of phantoms for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) research, (3) measurement and analysis of spatial resolution properties of automated breast ultrasound devices, and (4) improvement in standardization of quantitative ultrasound for bone.
