The CDRH X-ray Calibration Laboratory (XCL) evaluates, purchases, calibrates, maintains, and provides logistics support for the instruments that are used by FDA inspectors to enforce federal laws. These inspections assist in regulating the performance of diagnostic medical x-ray machines in accordance with the Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act of 1968. The X-ray Calibration Laboratory is ISO17025-compliant, and NVLAP Accredited to calibrate detectors that measure radiation output from x-ray machines. In addition, the lab calibrates instruments used in the NEXT Program to measure patient dose for specific medical exams. XCL staff also provides oversight of CDRH personnel radiation safety and use of radioactive materials regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
