On-Site Contractor Provided Services
Pathology services are provided by an on-site contractor who operates government-owned facilities at NCTR, supplying NCTR's investigators with state-of-the art services such as:

General Pathology Services
- animal necropsy and histopathology
- whole body perfusion fixation of rodents and non-human primates
- Zebrafish colony surveillance
- virtual microscopy/pathology system (ScanScope) allowing digital storage of an entire microscope slide at diagnostic resolution
- glycol methacrylate and methyl methacrylate plastic sectioning
- glycol methacrylate embedding and sectioning at ½ micron in thickness for examination by the light microscope
- Gross Pathology System (GPS) for automated collection of gross pathology data coordinated with Inlife data
- DNA or RNA isolation from microdissected material
- Laser Capture Microdissection (LMD)
- immunohistochemistry for numerous hormones, hormone receptors, oncogenes, and other proteins as requested by investigators
- nonradioactive in situ hybridization (ISH)
- PCR (solution PCR, solution RT-PCR, in situ PCR, in situ RT-PCR)
- plastic embedding
- Quantum dots (nanoscale crystals) as markers of in vivo biologic phenomena
- recycling waste ethanol, methanol, acetone, xylene to histological grade solvents, waste formalin to 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin

- automated sperm analysis for count, motility, and morphology
- developmental toxicity indices (Segment II teratology, fertility assessment by continuous breeding)
- vaginal cytology specimen processing and evaluation of reproductive cycles
- ovarian toxicity assessment using standardized follicle count procedures
- genetic monitoring of rodent strains by microsatellate DNA analysis
Assay Services
- apoptosis assays (TUNEL, ISOL)
- proliferation assays (BrdU, Ki67, PNA, Histone mRNA)
Tissue Sections
- quantitative morphometry on paraffin-embedded tissue sections
- processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining of tissue sections for Laser Capture Microdissection available in both paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues
- immunohistochemistry or special staining on FFPE (formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded) tissues or tissues fixed in other fixatives
- immunohistochemistry or special staining on cell preparations
- frozen tissue preparation using cryostat or sliding microtome, including embedding, sectioning and staining (routine staining, special staining and immunohistochemical staining)
- methods-development services to adapt and evaluate the suitability of commercially available antibodies to rodent tissues
Imaging Services
- photography, light and fluorescent microscopy, microphotography/digital and film, Leica DMRA2 Photomicroscope with fluorescence
- photomicrography and gross photography are available in support of NCTR investigators for both publication and presentation purposes
- gross photography system
- image analysis including microdensitometry, planar morphometry, particle analysis, cell proliferation and apoptotic indices using Positive Pixel Count Algorithm and Nuclear Algorithm (Aperio)
- digital macrophotography (digitized images are stored on a server located at the NCTR)
