Food Protection

Research at NCTR

One of the strategic goals of the FDA's National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) is to “conduct research to strengthen our understanding of food safety and food defense”. To that end, researchers at NCTR are conducting research in the following areas: 1) food safety, food biosecurity, and methods development; 2) antimicrobial resistance; and 3) gastrointestinal microbiology and host interactions.

Food protection research projects being conducted at NCTR include:

  • Real-Time PCR Assays for Ricin and Related Potential Bioterrorism Agents in Foods (P00684)
  • Laboratory Studies in Melamine and Cyanuric Acid Biochemical Toxicology (E0729101)
  • Chemical Inactivation of Protein Toxins on Food Contact Surfaces (E0730301)
  • Biostatistical Modeling for Food Protection Plan (S00703)
  • Molecular Characterization of Salmonella spp. and Vibrio spp. Isolated from Seafood and Development of Microarray Detection Method (E0720801)
  • ADDEND: Effect of Egg White Addition to Milk and Ground Beef on the Survival of Sterne Strain of Bacillus anthracis, Salmonella Enterococci, and Staphylococci at different temperatures (E0725111)
  • Mechanistic Evaluation of the Induction of Lymphoproliferation and Apoptosis Inhibition by Probiotic Bacteria in Mice Infected with Salmonella Enterica (E0727601)
  • Molecular Characterization of Salmonella spp. and Vibrio spp. Isolated from Seafood and Development of Microarray Detection Method (E0720801)
  • Antimicrobial Resistance Genetics of "Emerging" Salmonella Enterica Serovar Javiana Phenotypes Involved in Clinical and Food-Related Outbreaks (E0726701)
  • Rapid Bacterial Identification with Subspecies-Level Specificity (E0714701)
  • Innovative, Static, and Dynamic Chemical Sensors for Food Safety - Litmus CRADA (E0719901)

The NCTR Research Accomplishments and Plans Document contains information on the latest accomplishments and plans in NCTR's food protection research as well as project and publication listings.
