Research Technician (Interdisciplinary)

Immunity to intracellular infections, including Francisella and Mycobacteri

A technical position is available immediately in the Immunology Section of the Laboratory of Mycobacterial Diseases and Cellular Immunology at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research of the U.S. FDA (CBER / FDA), on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.  As part of the NIH community, CBER has a strong scientific climate, excellent collaborative opportunities, BSL2 / BLS3 laboratory space, and well- equipped facilities that include state-of-the-art-animal care.  The Immunology Section, directed by Dr. Karen Elkins, is interested in the fundamental nature of protective immunity to intracellular bacteria, including Francisella tularensis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.  

The candidate will be expected to develop and execute research projects with a high degree of independence, and contribute substantively to writing associated manuscripts; manage overall laboratory operations, including providing technical guidance to other laboratory personnel, maintaining and performing quality control of lab reagents, stocks, and supplies, ordering and tracking budget expenditures, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with the Center’s safety and animal care guidelines; and participate in review of FDA / CBER regulatory submissions.  

Qualifications:

Candidates must be US citizens.  A B.S. and/or M.S. degree in a biomedical discipline is preferable. Strong experience in a biomedical research laboratory setting is crucial. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in modern immunology, bacteriology, tissue culture, molecular biology, and/or animal (mouse) handling; intelligence, independence and initiative; fluency in English; and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. 

Salary Range:

Salary equivalent to GS-9 to GS-12 ($50,408 - $95.026).  Salary is commensurate with education and experience with an excellent benefits package. The candidate may also be eligible for the PHS Commissioned Corps.
